Mon Health Marion Neighborhood Hospital is proud to honor Michelle George, RN, as The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses recipient. Awarded to nurses biannually at the hospital, The DAISY Award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

The nomination submitted from one of Michelle’s peers read:

“There was a patient admitted to the acute care unit of the hospital that had a cognitive disability. The patient lived in a group home and thrives in an environment that involves routine and little change. The patient was struggling to adjust to the shift rotation of changing caregivers. The patient expressed that she really felt most comfortable when Michelle was taking care of her. The patient kept asking for Michelle and when she would be back to work. One of the staff got the message to Michelle that the patient was asking for her. Michelle came in on her night off and brought the patient coloring books and activities to make her more comfortable while she was admitted. I think this action of taking time out of her personal life to make a patient more comfortable is above and beyond of her nursing responsibility.”

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Michelle is a Registered Nurse in the Inpatient Unit and has worked for Mon Health Marion Neighborhood Hospital since its opening in 2021. Her acts of selflessness and commitment to patient care has brought immense appreciation from both the patients and employees at Mon Health.

“I am extremely proud of Michelle,” said Carla Hamner, Hospital Administrator at Mon Health Marion Neighborhood Hospital. “She exemplifies the true spirit of nursing and embodies kindness in every aspect of her work. She consistently goes above and beyond to provide exceptional care and support to all our patients, families, and colleagues. I am not surprised she won this award.”
