Mon Health Medical Center Among First Hospitals Chosen for National AFib Clinical Trial

Posted Date: 2/6/2020
Boston Scientific, the developer of the innovative WATCHMAN device that reduces the risk of stroke for atrial fibrillation (AFib) patients has chosen Mon Health Medical Center among the first hospitals to participate in national clinical trials.

Mon Health Medical Center is also the first hospital in West Virginia selected for the clinical trials by Boston Scientific.

Further, Mon Health Medical Center was recently recognized by the American College of Cardiology as the first and only hospital in West Virginia to earn accreditation for AFib with Electrophysiology Services, recognizing its expertise and commitment to treating AFib patients.

“These two national and significant recognitions are validation that Mon Health System is leading the way in providing innovative and effective treatment for West Virginia and regional patients with AFib,” said Dr. Wissam Gharib, structural heart cardiologist at the Mon Health Heart & Vascular Center. “The innovations and treatments being offered at our flagship hospital, Mon Health Medical Center, have the power to transform health care and we are proud to continue our long tradition of bringing the latest medical advances to the communities we serve.”

Many patients with AFib are at risk for a stroke when blood clots form in a small pouch of the left atrium known as the left atrial appendage. Boston Scientific produces an FDA approved WATCHMAN device which reduces the risk of stroke by addressing the issue and eliminating the need for long term blood thinners. This new study is designed to determine if left atrial appendage closure with the newly designed WATCHMAN FLX™ device is a reasonable alternative to blood thinners for stroke protection following AFib ablation.

Mon Health’s Heart & Vascular team of physicians and nurses are dedicated to the treatment of arrhythmias and structural heart disease. Cardiologists at Mon Health Medical Center were the first in West Virginia and the region to implant the WATCHMAN device and today are among the nation’s leading specialists in the field.
