Mon Health Medical Center Hosts “Mammos & Massages” Event in Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness

Posted Date: 10/30/2024
This October, Vandalia Health’s Mon Health Medical Center held two sessions of its "Mammos and Massages" event, creating a welcoming, comfortable, and supportive environment for women to receive their yearly mammograms.

Women who were eligible for a mammogram were invited to attend the event with a friend and enjoy massages from local massage therapists and light refreshments.

The event was designed to make the process of getting a mammogram less intimidating and more supportive, reminding women they are not alone in an activity that can often feel uncomfortable.

“Annual mammograms are a necessary part of the women’s health journey and crucial to identify issues quickly to start the treatment journey,” said Dr. Krystal Atkinson, Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Nursing Officer of Mon Health Medical Center and Chief Nursing Executive of Mon Health System. “Our goal in offering mammos and massages was to decrease the anxiety of the testing, creating a relaxed environment where women can encourage and support each other through this necessary procedure and support proactive breast health. Post-mammogram, patients were greeted with snacks and a chair massage. This was a great surprise for all participants scheduled for mammograms over two weeks.”

Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer among West Virginia women. Women over the age of 40 are recommended to schedule a routine breast screening.

Mon Health offers 3D mammograms at locations in Fairmont, Grafton, Kingwood, Morgantown, and Weston, with results provided within 24 hours. For those who have had a screening at another facility, Mon Health can obtain those images for comparison.
