Mon Health System Recognizes Postpartum Depression Awareness Month

Posted Date: 5/28/2024
May is nationally recognized as Postpartum Depression Awareness (PPD) Month, a month to educate the public about maternal mental health and resources for new mothers. Mon Health System is on mission to educate and offer support to new parents through the Progressing Through Postpartum (P3) Program.

Research shows that one in five mothers and one in 10 partners will experience a perinatal mood disorder during pregnancy and up to a year after giving birth. PPD is a medical condition and one of several types of perinatal mood disorders that many women may develop during pregnancy and after delivery. Mood changes are expected during pregnancy and postpartum, however PPD symptoms may include strong feelings of sadness, anxiety, and tiredness that last for a longer than a few weeks after giving birth. For some people, these symptoms may appear later within the first year postpartum. These feelings can make it hard for new mothers to take care of themselves and their new baby.

Through Mon Health’s P3 Program, mothers are throughout pregnancy and post-delivery for any indication of anxiety, depression, or mood disorder. This allows for early detection and management of symptoms, giving the P3 team an opportunity to connect with mothers early on and provide continuous support throughout their pregnancy and postpartum journey.

The P3’s proactive approach aims to meet mothers where they are and provide the support and resources they need to care for themselves and their new baby throughout their prenatal and postpartum journey.

Mon Health’s P3 Program offers a variety of weekly virtual support groups with topics that are designed to meet your needs on the journey to parenthood. In addition, P3 provides in-person feeding support, connects families to community resources, and can refer to therapy and psychiatry providers with training in maternal mental health.

“I often say, 'We have to take care of the momma!' Proactive outreach allows our team to meet you where you are and connect you to the resources your family needs,” said Jennifer Bender, Perinatal Nurse Navigator. “We don't just want you to survive, we want everyone to thrive. We focus on the baby thriving, and that is important, but we are here to care for the caregivers as well."
