Mon Health Urology Patient Finds Relief Through InterStim Procedure
Posted Date: 9/9/2021
When Marilyn Kubala struggled with a leaky bladder, she took all the right steps in resolving the issue. After trying several medications, she placed her trust in the
Mon Health Urology team in Morgantown, WV to eliminate the issue for good.
Marilyn had started experiencing a leaky bladder in late 2018. After her problems persisted, she decided to make an appointment to see
Dr. Jaschar Shakuri-Rad, Urologist and Robotic Surgeon at Mon Health Urology in January 2019.
"We tried medication two different times, and nothing seemed to work," Marilyn said. "In April 2019, Dr. Rad mentioned the InterStim bladder stimulator and wanted to know if I was interested in trying it."
InterStim Therapy is an FDA-approved procedure which has been shown to help women with urinary urgency, urgency urinary incontinence, urinary retention, and fecal incontinence. This two-phase procedure works by sending electrical pulses to the sacral nerves, located in the lower area of the spinal cord, which controls the bladder and nerves that help urinary function.
Marilyn received the minimally invasive InterStim procedure in April 2019 at the
Mon Health Center for Outpatient Surgery. After two hours, Marilyn was on her way home and on the road to recovery.
"It was a one-day procedure that I was sedated for, it took about an hour. I felt great when I got back to my room and didn't have any limits except to rest. The same day when I got home, I didn't even have a leaky bladder," she said. "I haven't had any problems since."
Her experience at the Mon Health Center for Outpatient Surgery, although short, was successful in eliminating Marilyn's leaky bladder issues.
"The people that work at the Mon Health Outpatient Surgery Center are very nice and make you feel good while you're there. I get nervous sometimes with procedures, but everything went so smoothly that day. The girls at the Outpatient Surgery Center work very hard to make you feel comfortable."
Marilyn continues to see Dr. Rad for follow up appointments to ensure her issues do not return.
"From day one when I started seeing Dr. Rad, everyone from the receptionist to the nurses were so nice and helpful. I was so impressed with Dr. Rad because he came in and was so kind, understanding, and spent time answering all my questions. He is a great, supportive doctor and he really cares about his patients."
Marilyn lives in Smithfield, PA and has two sisters and a brother. She currently works as a cleaner and has volunteered to spend time with elderly patients as well as her parents when they were ill.
"I have been a patient at Mon Health Medical Center for a long time and have had fantastic doctors, including
Dr. Burns,
Dr. Statler,
Dr. Reynolds, and of course,
Dr. Rad. I have received great care from all of them."
