Beth Stepek, Surgical RN at Mon Health Medical Center
The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses Honoree
Beth Stepek, RN, of Mon Health Medical Center was recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. Awarded to nurses quarterly at Mon Health Medical Center, The DAISY Award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.
The nomination submitted from one of Beth’s coworkers read, “For 37 years, Beth has gone above and beyond in the field of nursing. In the short five years that I have known her, she has shown me what it takes to be a well-rounded individual, a leader, and most importantly, a compassionate and dedicated nurse. She is the biggest advocate for her patients, especially when they cannot be advocates for themselves. From either picking up a call shift last minute or ensuring that our patients receive nothing short of the best care, nothing could keep her from being an amazing nurse, and an even better person.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
“When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night,” said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, CEO and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation. “Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Mon Health Medical Center are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”
Beth is a Registered Nurse in the Operating Room and has worked for Mon Health Medical Center for nearly six years.
“To be able to help and be supportive to people when they are at their most vulnerable is very rewarding. After 37 years as a nurse, I still feel glad and fulfilled that I chose nursing as a career,” Beth said. “I am proud to have been surrounded with many nurses that are wonderful advocates for their patients and achieve excellence in nursing. I am lucky to work each day with them, they are all committed to doing what is best for the patient.”
“We are thrilled to have Beth represent our surgical staff and Mon Health Medical Center as the recipient of this prestigious International Nursing Award,” said Krystal Atkinson, Chief Nursing Executive at Mon Health System. “Beth is an incredible example of what it means to feel the difference at Mon Health.”
