Mon Health Medical Center Auxiliary Dedicates & Recognizes 2022 Virginia Jarrett Volunteer of the Year

L-R: Olivia Rohrssen, Pharmacist at Mon Health Medical Center; Amanda Smith, Registered Nurse at Mon Health Medical Center; Bill Burgess, 2022 Virginia Jarrett Volunteer of the Year Recipient; Nate James, Mon Health System Director of Employee & Volunteer Engagement

The Mon Health Medical Center Auxiliary has announced that their annual volunteer services award will be dedicated to long-term volunteer and named the Virginia Jarrett Volunteer of the Year Award.

“The award was named after Virginia Jarrett, who volunteered for 27 years and had over 26,000 volunteer hours,” said Nate James, Mon Health System Director of Employee and Volunteer Engagement. “Virginia passed away in February 2022, and the Volunteer Services Department could not think of a better way to honor her life and volunteer commitment than naming our highest award after her.”

Virginia’s daughter Amanda Smith and granddaughter Olivia Rohrssen also work and volunteer at Mon Health Medical Center.

“After Virginia retired, she missed working so I volunteered her. At first, she didn’t think she would have time, but she enjoyed talking with staff and patients,” said Amanda, Registered Nurse at Mon Health Medical Center. “She took great pride working on many projects for the hospital. Mon Health means a great deal to my family, and we feel supported by staff and administration, especially regarding Virginia.”

“She always treated volunteering like a real job because she knew that every day she showed up, she could make a difference,” said Olivia, Pharmacist at Mon Health Medical Center. “She worked hard but ultimately the friendship and community brought her as much joy as she did to them. Mon Health feels like home, like family, and I’m proud to be a part of it. I’m especially proud to have my grandma’s name always be a part of the volunteer services.”

During the annual Mon Health Medical Center Auxiliary luncheon, Bill Burgess was announced as the 2022 Virginia Jarrett Volunteer of the Year. Bill has volunteered in the Endoscopy Center for the past four years for a total of 1,570 hours. Bill is known to help wherever he is needed and is a true asset to the Volunteer Services Department at Mon Health Medical Center.

“What I like best about volunteering at Mon Health in the endoscopy area is giving our patients a good experience and a friendly face to remember when they leave the hospital,” Bill said. “It also gives me a reason to get up for the days I volunteer here.”
