Vandalia Health Mon Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital Offering Free Vein Screenings April 28

Posted Date: 4/25/2025

Ferdinand C. Martinez, MD, will offer free vein screenings from 2-4 p.m., April 28, at Vandalia Health Mon Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston. The screening will provide information about a patient’s vein health and whether further care is needed to alleviate any problems. This free clinic is ideal for individuals experiencing symptoms such as leg pain, swelling or visible vein changes who may be unaware that these could be signs of treatable vein disease.

The screenings will take place at the Oncology/Vein/Infusion Center located on the first floor of the hospital. Interested parties may call 304-517-1272 to reserve a spot, as availability is limited.

During the testing, patients will view a short video and hear a presentation by Dr. Martinez. Each patient is then taken to an exam room individually for an ultrasound of the legs. From that testing, it will be determined whether the patient should return for a full evaluation.

Varicose veins are a common but often overlooked condition affecting more than 30 million Americans, though only about 1.9 million seek treatment. Caused by malfunctioning venous valves, varicose veins appear as bulging, dilated veins due to blood flowing backward and pooling—a condition known as venous reflux. Common symptoms include aching legs, skin rashes, burning or itching, heaviness, fatigue and swelling. In advanced cases, symptoms may progress to skin discoloration, persistent swelling, and open sores. The goal of the Mon Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital screening is to identify these issues early and help individuals manage symptoms for a healthier life.

"Many people live with the discomfort of varicose veins without realizing there are safe, effective treatment options available," Dr. Martinez said. "From lifestyle changes to advanced minimally invasive procedures, we can help patients find relief and improve their quality of life."
