The primary symptom of varicose veins is the appearance of highly visible, misshapen veins, usually on the legs. Besides being unsightly, varicose veins can be painful, especially when standing. You may suffer from pain, swelling, heaviness, and aches in the legs. In some cases, you may have swelling, discoloration, or ulcers around the ankles as well. Severe long-standing varicose veins can lead to leg swelling, venous eczema, skin thickening (lipodermatosclerosis) and ulceration. Life-threatening complications are uncommon, but varicose veins may be confused with deep vein thrombosis, which can be life-threatening.
