Huggins Furthers Pledge to Support Cancer Care Across Vandalia Health with $380K Donation to Mon Health

Posted Date: 8/22/2024
College Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Bob Huggins presented a check of $380,000 in support of cancer care services to Mon Health Cancer Center on Thursday, August 22.

In February 2024, Huggins announced that the funds of the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Endowment Fund, established by Huggins and his family in his mother’s name to support cancer care and research across West Virginia, would be directed to Vandalia Health. Vandalia Health, comprised of CAMC Health System, Davis Health System and Mon Health System hospitals, providers, and clinics, provides cancer care services spanning the entire state of West Virginia and treats more than 50,000 cancer patients annually.

Huggins presented the $380,000 check at the Mon Health Zelda Stein Weiss Cancer Center at Mon Health Medical Center as a part of his pledge from the 2024 Bob Huggins Fish Fry to support cancer care services across West Virginia through Vandalia Health. Mon Health’s oncology providers, leadership, and Mon Health Medical Center Foundation were in attendance to accept the donation.

“We are honored that Coach Huggins, his family, and Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Endowment Fund have continued to hold their annual Fish Fry presented by Little General Stores to improve cancer care and provide much needed financial support for cancer care across West Virginia through Vandalia Health programs, providers, and sites of care,” said David Goldberg, President and CEO of Mon Health System and Davis Health System - Vandalia Health North, and Executive Vice President of Vandalia Health. “These funds are from thousands of donors that came from far and wide to attend one of the most popular community events in our state to raise awareness and funds to support cancer care delivery, access, and outcomes. Cancer impacts so many, even my own family, so to partner with Coach Huggins, his family, and his friends to improve outcomes, access, and quality of care is so very important. We cannot do it alone and this community support is the difference. We are thankful for this relationship, friendship of the family and donors, and this very generous gift.”

The recent donation follows Huggins’ and the endowment fund’s donation of $100,000 to support cancer care services at CAMC in July at CAMC Beckley Cancer Center. Both donations will be used to support the services and the patients treated across the Vandalia Health system.
