Posted Date: 6/4/2024
Mon Health’s Dr. Mustapha Daouadi, Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery, successfully completed the system’s first bariatrics procedure at Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital in Kingwood, West Virginia.
Since 2010, Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital has been designated as a Bariatric Center of Excellence by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program, and in February 2024, Mon Health System launched Mon Health Bariatrics.
Dr. Mustapha Daouadi and Dr. Emanuel Mejias now offer advanced bariatric procedures, including minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery options at Mon Health Medical Center and at Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital. On Tuesday, May 28, Dr. Daouadi performed Mon Health Bariatrics’ first procedure.
“I am thrilled to share a significant milestone we achieved at Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital in Kingwood,” said Dr. Daouadi. “I performed our first robotic-assisted Revision Bariatric surgery case, which involved the removal of a gastric band and conversion to a Roux En-Y gastric bypass, and the patient did exceptionally well. With the precision and minimally invasive nature of robotic-assisted surgery, our patient reported minimal pain, and started their bariatric diet immediately after surgery. The patient was discharged home one day after surgery. This demonstrates the procedure's effectiveness and the high-quality care our team provides.”
Bariatrics, or weight loss surgery, has been proven to be a safe and effective tool for durable and maintained weight loss. The aim of bariatric surgery is to lose weight and become healthier by curing or improving the significant medical problems that are associated with excessive weight.
Patients who are interested in undergoing bariatric surgery through Mon Health Bariatrics must complete psychological and dietary assessments. These comprehensive assessments take up to six months and ensure that the patient is best fit for the procedure, recovery, and lifestyle changes both before and after the operation.
“This case shows our commitment to using advanced technology to improve patient outcomes,” said Dr. Daouadi. “I am happy with the success of this procedure and look forward to continuing to provide innovative and compassionate care to our community.”
