Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital’s Peer Recovery Coach Awarded Beacon of Hope Award

Posted Date: 10/3/2024
Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital’s Peer Recovery Coach, Zac Hoover, has been selected as a 2024 Beacon of Hope Award recipient for his impact in the lives of those supported by the hospital’s Peer Recovery Program.

The Beacon of Hope awards, introduced in 2023 and presented by Mosaic Group, stands to recognize and celebrate peer recovery coaches. The award honors exceptional peer recovery coaches within the Mosaic Group’s evidence-based Reverse the Cycle program. This year, over 70 nominations were submitted for this award and Zac Hoover was one of five honorees selected Beacon of Hope Award recipients.

Zac uses his lived experience to help others find and sustain recovery. As a Peer Recovery Coach at Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital, he provides support and guidance to individuals experiencing substance use disorder. This support includes discussing treatment options, referrals and connections to treatment, as well as connecting the patient to various community resources.

“It's an honor to receive this award. Working in recovery reminds me daily of where I was and how far I have come. There are a lot of ups and downs with this work but connecting with patients and watching them transform their lives and rebuild broken relationships makes it worth it. To me this is not an "I" award, it is a "WE" award. A lot like recovery, this job takes a tribe of people. I want to thank my Recovery Care Team, the entire Preston Memorial staff, as well as everyone in the community and everyone else that has supported me and this program along the way. Recovery is possible”, said award recipient, Zac Hoover.

On Monday, Sept. 23, staff gathered to celebrate Zac’s achievement and to present him with the Beacon of Hope Award.

“Zac is an integral part of Preston’s Recovery Care team. His compassion and patient-centered care approach allows him to have good rapport with individuals seeking help as well as individuals currently in recovery. He has a vast knowledge of area resources and professional collaborations. It has been inspiring to watch him truly help those in need. We are very thankful that Zac is a part of our team,” said Jessica Myers, RN, Mon Health Preston Recovery Care Program Manager.

Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital, Mon Health Medical Center, and Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital provide support and services at the Emergency Room with a peer recovery program – Reverse the Cycle. All three hospitals have peer recovery coaches available for patients in the ER who screen positive for substance use.
