Mon General Hospital Capital Campaign raises $7.2 million, surpassing goal

Posted Date: 11/25/2013

Mon General Hospital’s “The Commitment Continues…” capital campaign has come to an end after surpassing its fund raising goal by more than $1.2 million.

“The Foundation of Mon General is thrilled to announce the successful completion of ‘The Commitment Continues…’ capital campaign,” said Bill Hennessey, Executive Director of The Foundation. “Our goal was to raise $6 million to support the renovation and expansion of four high volume procedure areas at the hospital. We ended up raising $7.2 million.”

“Mon General started this campaign because we are committed to being an exceptional provider of health care for the community,” said Mon Health System President and CEO Darryl Duncan. “The community has responded overwhelmingly with significant and generous support.

“We are both grateful for the community’s kindness and generosity and humbled by the responsibility we have to our community,” Duncan said.

The procedure areas benefiting from the campaign included Orthopedic Surgery, Endoscopy, Birthing Services and Cardiac Catheterization. A total of $25 million in enhancements and expansion took place in these areas during the past several years.

The new Orthopedic Center, which features four orthopedic operating rooms, opened in January 2012. In addition to the operating rooms, the center features private pre- and post-operative patient rooms and support areas. During the past five years, Mon General had experienced a 20 percent increase in the number of orthopedic procedures being performed. The new center was designed to meet the growing need for orthopedic procedures.

The new Endoscopy Center opened in July 2012. Previously, endoscopy procedures, such as colonoscopies, had to be performed in general operating rooms. This was inefficient and tied up operating room resources. The center’s four endoscopy rooms provide a dedicated space for these procedures, freeing the general operating rooms for more complex surgeries.

In recent years, the number of births at Mon General have nearly doubled. The Hazel Ruby McQuain Birth Center’s expansion and renovation was necessary to meet this growth. The new birth center features 16 birthing suites and a dedicated C-Section operating room. The new center opened this past April.

Renovation and expansion of Mon General’s Cardiac Catheterization labs was also completed this past spring. Mon General incorporated the next generation of digital technology into this project, which saves time, improves patient care and minimizes risk. The project included renovating all three current cath labs and creating a state-of-the-art Electrophysiology Room, along with private pre- and post-operative patient rooms.

“When the campaign total had just reached $5 million, a new challenge gift was issued by an anonymous donor,” said Steve LaCagnin, Chairman of the Mon General Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. ‘This generous donor matched the final $1 million that we needed to raise and provided the incentive we were looking for to capture the goal.”

“I would like to personally thank everyone who has supported the capital campaign,” Hennessey said. “You helped provide the support to improve the procedural areas of Mon General that have already been utilized by thousands of patients. Your generosity has made a tremendous difference in this region of West Virginia.”
