Orthopedic Surgeon Performs Advanced Cartilage Procedure at Mon Health Medical Center
Posted Date: 1/18/2024
Dr. Gregory Purnell, a member of Mon Health Medical Center Staff, is now performing MACI (autologous cultured chondrocytes on a collagen membrane), an advanced approach to restoring damaged cartilage in the knee in the appropriate patients.
MACI is a cartilage restoration procedure that utilizes a patient’s own cartilage cells to construct a graft that can be customized for their defect, as opposed to donor grafts. It is FDA approved for patients up to the age of 55 years old. The MACI procedure, which has not yet been widely performed in West Virginia, has been proven to allow patients to recover from damaged knee cartilage and return to an active lifestyle. Although this procedure allows for restoration of damaged cartilage, it is not intended to treat osteoarthritis.
“I am proud to be able to offer this advanced procedure close-to-home to patients in West Virginia,” said Dr. Purnell. “The benefits of this procedure have been widely proven, allowing patients to advance recovery and return to an active lifestyle after their surgery through personalized rehabilitation.”
The advanced cartilage procedure, which involves state-of-the-art techniques and technology, allows for targeted and precise treatment of cartilage injuries. Dr. Purnell's pioneering work not only showcases his dedication to advancing orthopedic medicine but also signifies a positive shift in the accessibility of specialized care in West Virginia.
