Getting My Life Back with Pelvic Floor Therapy | Wendra’s Story

Posted Date: 07/08/2024
Wendra lives in Weston, West Virginia with her husband of nearly 20 years. She has five children who keep her busy with activities. She enjoys spending time with her family and swimming with her children, but she hasn’t always been able to do those things. For several years, Wendra has suffered from incontinence, leaving her depressed and housebound.

“Everything was getting out of hand. I was leaking all the time, I was embarrassed and depressed, and I didn’t want to leave the house,” said Wendra. “I had seen several urologists and I had a surgery to get a pelvic sling, but four months later it failed and I was worse off than when my problems began.”

Wendra was desperate for some help and willing to try anything. One day, she was scrolling through Facebook and saw a post advertising Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital’s new pelvic floor therapy program in Weston. She decided to give it a try.

“Going to pelvic floor therapy was the best decision I could have made,” said Wendra. “My physical therapist, Kate Jones, was easy to talk to and she actually listened to me, really hearing what I had to say. I had previously had my issues brushed off. I was told that because I had given birth to several children that my issues were normal, but they weren’t. Kate listened and believed me.”

Wendra began having pelvic floor therapy appointments for an hour each week and has started healing, getting her life back on track.

“I can finally leave the house and do activities with my family, going hours without leaking,” said Wendra. “I can swim in the pool with my kids and really enjoy my life again. Through the pelvic floor therapy appointments, being listened to and having real solutions to my problems, I feel less depressed because I know I am making good progress.”

Pelvic floor therapy at Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital is being offered to female patients who are experiencing a range of pelvic issues, including incontinence. Patients that schedule a pelvic therapy appointment can expect to receive specialized care that is customized to meet their specific pelvic floor needs. Patients may also learn techniques and exercises that promote long-term pelvic health and well-being.

“This can be an embarrassing thing, but it is important to find someone you can talk to and give you the help you need. You don’t have to live in hiding if you struggle with pelvic issues like I have,” said Wendra. “Take the step to schedule a pelvic floor therapy appointment and get your life back like I was able to do.”
