Advanced Pulmonary Care Services Now Offered in Kingwood, First Robotic Bronchoscopy Performed
Posted Date: 9/16/2024
Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital enhances pulmonary services with three new interventional procedures, expanding access to respiratory care in rural West Virginia.
In June, Mon Health System welcomed Dr. Peter Kochupura to lead Pulmonary Care Services. Dr. Kochupura joined pulmonologist Dr. Allison Cihla to bolster comprehensive lung care at Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital, and through his leadership, Mon Health has strengthened its pulmonary care services and introduced new procedures to best meet the needs of patients system wide.
In September, Dr. Kochupura performed Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital’s first robotic-assisted bronchoscopy using Intuitive’s Ion system. This minimally invasive procedure allows providers to reach small lesions in all 18 segments of the lung with more reach, precision, and stability than the previous standard bronchoscopy procedure.
“I'm very excited about expanding pulmonary services in Preston County and bringing advanced bronchoscopy to this community. This is an opportunity to find lung cancer early and save lives from this terrible disease,” said Dr. Kochupura. “Robotic bronchoscopy using the Ion platform is the very best that medicine has to offer, as good as you would find in the biggest hospitals in America, and we have it right here in Kingwood. I'm thrilled to be a part of the growth in Preston County and the larger Mon Health community. It's my pleasure to be a part of this amazing team.”
The Ion system’s minimally invasive approach and advanced reach allows for the increased ability to detect lung cancer early. This high-tech offering at Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital expands access to quality, close-to-home cancer detection procedures to patients in Kingwood and throughout the region.
“Receiving this procedure was an absolutely fabulous experience. Everyone from the nurses to Dr. Kochupura were incredibly kind and knowledgeable. I had such a positive experience in every way,” said Bonnie Goldberg, the patient to undergo the hospital’s first robotic-assisted bronchoscopy using Intuitive’s Ion system. “I went home the same day and went to work the very next day feeling great. I really believe this procedure will help so many people and I will say to anyone who might be interested in it to trust their care team and know that at Mon Health, they are in the best hands.”
In addition to the robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital is now offering endobronchial ultrasounds (EBUS) and endoscopic ultrasounds (EUS). Both EBUS and EUS are minimally invasive techniques that can be used to explore and sample tissue from lymph nodes in the lungs. Offering these procedures further expands access to high-quality lung care for patients in Preston County and beyond.
