Breast Cancer Luncheon Hosted by Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital and Lewis County CEOS Clubs

Posted Date: 9/21/2023
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Lewis County Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS) Clubs are partnering together to host a luncheon to encourage community members to learn more about the importance of early detection for breast cancer. The Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon will be held at Noon on Tuesday, October 10 at the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Weston.

The goal of screening tests for breast cancer is early detection. Breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be small and still confined to the breast. The size of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are some of the most important factors in predicting the outlook of a woman with this disease.

One of the best screenings for breast cancer is a mammogram. Research shows that women who have regular mammograms are more likely to catch early signs of breast cancer by detecting breast changes years before physical symptoms might occur.

Dr. Ihtishaam Qazi, Mon Health System Oncologist, will speak at the luncheon alongside Mary Hendricks, a current breast cancer survivor. Mary will share her journey so far and the importance of early detection.

"Mammograms are lifesavers. My annual exam and subsequent ultrasound showed an 'unusual' result, which led to a biopsy and lumpectomy for Stage 1 breast cancer,” said Mary Hendricks. “I am currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment. If there is one piece of advice I would give to all women, it would be to get a yearly mammogram. Early detection is key to survival.”

Individuals who are interested in participating in the Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon must register by October 4 by calling (304) 269-4660.
