Foundation of Mon General Hospital presents $36,000 in scholarships

The Foundation of Mon General Hospital presented $36,000 in scholarships to 36 area students pursuing degrees in healthcare fields at its 27th Annual Health Career Scholarship Awards Program on Monday evening, May 8.

Each scholarship was worth $1,000. The presentation took place in the Hazel Ruby McQuain Conference Center at Mon General Hospital.

Three Rachel C. Piribek Scholarships were presented. Recipients were Makenzie Simpson of Morgantown, a first-year recipient pursuing a Medical Technology degree from West Virginia University; Benjamin Perry of Morgantown, a first-year recipient seeking a Pharmacy degree from WVU; and Emilea Warnick of Kingwood, a second-year recipient seeking a Biomedical Engineering degree from WVU.

Three George D. Hott Memorial Scholarships were presented. Receiving these were Tressa Bonasso of Fairmont, a second-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree from WVU; Morgan Darling of Core, WV, a first year recipient seeking a Nursing degree from WVU; and Heidi Dunn of Morgantown, a fourth-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree from WVU.
 
Two John Mathew Gay Brown Family Foundation Scholarships were presented. Receiving these were Joseph Ellis of Bridgeport, a second-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree from WVU; and Alexandra Harvey of Ohiopyle, PA, a fourth-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree from Duquesne University.

Receiving the Gail W. Cunningham Memorial Scholarships was Miranda Moser of Morgantown, a first-year recipient seeking a Pharmacy degree from WVU.
  
Four Martha Phillips Hupp Scholarships were presented. Receiving these were first-year recipient Emiley Bruner, who is seeking a Nursing degree from WVU; fourth-year recipient Marlea Donaldson of Fairmont, who is seeking a Nursing degree from Fairmont State University (FSU); first-year recipient Andrea Idler of Morgantown, who is seeking a Biomedical Engineering degree from WVU; and first-year recipient Adrienne Kemp-Rye of Morgantown, who is seeking a Biology degree from WVU.

The Glenn and Susan Adrian Scholarship went to April Strahin of Independence, WV, a fourth-year recipient studying Pharmacy at WVU.

Three Wilma B. Nailler Memorial Scholarships were awarded.  Receiving the scholarships were Madelyn Harvey of Morgantown, a fourth-year recipient seeking a Pharmacy degree from WVU; Whitney James of Lost Creek, a second-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree at WVU; and Hailey Swift of Connellsville, PA, a second-year recipient majoring in Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

Three John Michael Pritchard Memorial Scholarships were presented. The recipients were Amber Trickett of Fairmont, a fourth-year recipient studying Health Education at FSU; Samantha Hines of Nutter Fort, a second year recipient studying Pharmacy at WVU; and Scott Reed of Clarksburg, a third-year recipient studying Pharmacy at Alderson Broaddus.

Three Robert and Sharon Lynch Scholarships were presented. The third-year recipient was Jacob Layton of Smithfield, PA, who is seeking a Pharmacy degree from Waynesburg University; the second-year recipient was Ashley Galderisi of Lemont Furnace, PA, majoring in Nursing at Penn State, Fayette; and the first-year recipient was Olivia Sutton of Fairchance, PA, seeking a Nursing degree from Penn State.

Two Walter G. Hoffman, Jr., and Mary R. Hoffman scholarships were presented. These went to first-year recipients Justin Hardwick of Fairmont, planning to major in Nursing at WVU; and Patrick Henry of Masontown, seeking an MBA from West Liberty.

Two Edward and Norma Jean Skriner scholarships were awarded. First-year recipient was Cathy Li of Morgantown, who plans to study Biomedical Engineering. Second-year recipient was Kayla Horsey of Terra Alta, who is majoring in Nursing at WVU.

One Specialty Care scholarship was presented. Receiving this scholarship was second year recipient Victoria Sellaro of Morgantown, seeking a Physician’s Assistant degree from WVU.

Eight Foundation of Mon General scholarships were awarded. These went to Alexcis Barker of Hibbs, PA, a third-year recipient studying Nursing at Waynesburg University; Angela Bohon of Morgantown, a second-year recipient seeking a Masters of Nursing degree at WVU; Karalee Flohr of Fairmont, a third-year recipient seeking a Pharmacy degree from WVU; Grant Kisner of  Smithfield, PA, a first-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree from Penn State, Eberly Campus; Jeremy Pyles of Kingwood, a third-year recipient seeking a Pharmacy degree from WVU; Allison Smith of Newburg, a first-year recipient seeking a Medical Technology degree from WVU;  Glenn Taylor of Morgantown, a first-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree from WVU; and Abby Vavrick of Bridgeport, a first-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree from WVU.

Selection was based on the application, academic performance and financial need. Each applicant also submitted a letter describing why they selected a specific health career.

The Foundation created the Health Career Scholarship program in 1991 to promote health care careers in fields with projected worker shortages in the Morgantown area. Since the establishment of the program, the Foundation has awarded over $622,000 in Health Career Scholarships. A sub-committee of the Board of Directors of The Foundation selected the recipients.
