Mon General Hospital named Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care and Knee and Hip Replacement

Mon General Hospital has been recognized as a Blue Distinction Center© for both Maternity Care and Knee and Hip Replacement by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia, as part of Highmark’s Blue Distinction Specialty Care Program.

The Blue Distinction Specialty Care Program recognizes healthcare facilities that demonstrate expertise in delivering quality specialty care – safely, effectively and cost efficiently. The goal of the program is to help consumers find both quality and value for their specialty care needs, while encouraging healthcare professionals to improve the overall quality and delivery of healthcare nationwide.

To receive the Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care designation, Mon General Hospital demonstrated expertise and a commitment to quality care during both vaginal and cesarean section delivery.

Hospitals that receive a Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care designation agreed to meet requirements that align with principles that support evidence-based practices of care, as well as having initiated programs to promote successful breastfeeding, as described in the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative by Baby-Friendly USA and the Mother-Friendly Hospital program by the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS) through its “Ten Steps of Mother-Friendly Care.”

To receive the Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement, Mon General Hospital demonstrated expertise and a commitment to quality care, resulting in better overall outcomes for patients of comprehensive inpatient knee and hip replacement services. This includes total knee replacement and total hip replacement.

Criteria examined included complication rates and readmission rates obtained from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and healthcare claims data.

Blue Distinction Centers are hospitals recognized for delivering quality specialty care safely and effectively, based on objective measures developed with input from the medical community. Hospitals are assessed using a combination of publicly available quality information. The program also evaluates hospitals on overall patient satisfaction, including a willingness to recommend the hospital to others.
