Mon Health Cancer Center Receives ‘Redefined Beauty Box’ Donation for Patients

Posted Date: 2/13/2024
Patients from throughout the region come to the Mon Health Cancer Center to experience the latest in cancer treatment and technologies, coupled with a hallmark family-centered, personalized approach to each patient. Coming alongside Mon Health to better patient experiences and outcomes is Brooke Maxwell, creator of the Redefined Beauty Box.

Maxwell is a recent medical physics graduate from West Virginia University and a researcher with a passion for serving others and making a positive impact on cancer patients. Maxwell recently donated 50 Redefined Beauty Boxes to the Mon Health Medical Center Zelda Stein Weiss Cancer Center’s Infusion Center for women undergoing cancer treatment.

The Redefined Beauty Box stemmed from Maxwell’s desire to give back to women fighting cancer. It began as a research project during her time as a West Virginia University Honors Excell Program student. Each of Maxwell’s boxes is carefully curated based on her independent research and cancer patient feedback.

A Redefined Beauty Box contains two hand-selected head wraps, adhesive eyelashes, eyebrow stencils in two colors, a journal, lip balm, Queasy Pops for a natural way to ease the stomach, and “God Will Use This for Good” book by Max Lucado.

Research shows that patients who have a more positive outlook on themselves and their cancer journey react better to treatment and have a higher survival rate. Maxwell hopes that her boxes will provide some normalcy to patients and brighten their lives.

“I wanted to positively impact the way that women with cancer view themselves in their new, redefined beauty,” said Maxwell. “My research and my faith have driven me to make this donation and I’d like to give the glory to God for the success of this project. I’m thankful to Mon Health Cancer Center for accepting this donation and joining me to make an impact.”

The Redefined Beauty Boxes will be kept at the Infusion Center and given to patients who have or are anticipating hair loss.

"This is one of the most well thought out donations we have ever received,” said Tricia Julian, Oncology Nurse Navigator at Mon Health Medical Center. “The fact that Brooke interviewed patients to ask what they would like to have in a kit if they were to receive one was very inciteful and resulted in boxes that are perfect for our patients and so appreciated."
