Mon Health Cancer Center Welcomes Dr. Ghulam Abbas

Mon Health Zelda Stein Weiss Cancer Center is pleased to welcome Dr. Ghulam Abbas to lead the Thoracic Surgery program.
Dr. Abbas is an internationally recognized robotic thoracic surgeon, specializing in high-risk patients with locally advanced lung and esophageal cancers. Dr. Abbas is the Cancer Services Director of CAMC, Vandalia Health South Region, and will be joining Mon Health’s Zelda Stein Weiss Cancer Center in Vandalia Health’s North Region. Before joining CAMC, Dr. Abbas was the Chief of Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery at WVU Heart and Vascular Institute and Director of Surgical Thoracic Oncology at the WVU Cancer Institute.

He completed his residency training at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York and fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery at Rush University Medical Center. He subsequently obtained advanced training in minimally invasive lung and esophageal surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and in 2013, he received his master’s degree in healthcare management from Harvard University.
Dr. Abbas is board certified in thoracic surgery. He is the author of numerous peer reviewed scientific articles and book chapters and has been an invited speaker at many international conferences on lung and esophageal cancer. He is a member of several scientific and professional societies including the Society of Robotic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgery, the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, the General Thoracic Surgical Club, European Society of Thoracic Surgery and Southern.
“I am delighted to be part of an outstanding multidisciplinary team at Mon Health to provide comprehensive care for lung and esophageal cancer,” said Dr. Abbas. “We have a “screening to cure” approach for lung cancer with our lung cancer screening program, robotic navigation bronchoscopy for lung biopsy, and robotic lung sparing surgery for lung cancer even in patients with COPD. Our team also provides comprehensive care for benign and malignant esophageal conditions like Barrett’s Esophagus, esophageal cancer, achalasia, hiatal hernia, GERD, and more. We are a destination center for benign and malignant lung and esophageal conditions including mediastinal tumors, thymomas, and chest wall deformities.”
