Mon Health Heart & Vascular Team Performs its First Pulsed Field Ablation to Treat Atrial Fibrillation
Posted Date: 3/5/2024
The Mon Health Heart & Vascular team at Mon Health Medical Center performed its first pulsed field ablation (PFA) to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib) using the FARAPULSETM PFA System.
AFib is the most common type of irregular heartbeat and affects more than 5 million adults in the United States. Risk factors for AFib include advancing age, obesity, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and more. Using the FARAPULSETM PFA System, the Mon Health Heart & Vascular team is taking strides to advance the treatment of AFib in the region.
Dr. Matthew Gaskill and Dr. Salam Sbaity are the first in West Virginia to use Boston Scientific’s FDA approved FARAPULSETM PFA System, which works by electroporation, or the delivery of rapid high voltage pulsed electrical fields to tissue, leading to pores in the cell membrane and selective cell death. The device is proven to reduce patient risk and recovery times, allowing patients to return to normal activity within days of their procedure.
“Our implementation of the FARAPULSETM device for the treatment of AFib is a prime example of the patient-centric, data-driven care we provide at the Mon Health Heart & Vascular Center,” said Dr. Gaskill. “I’m proud of the work that I do and the advances that we continue to make at Mon Health, continuing to prove why we are a nationally recognized heart care center with exceptional patient outcomes.”
Mon Health Medical Center is among the first wave of high-profile centers across the United States that launched the FARAPULSETM PFA System. FARAPULSETM was approved by the FDA on January 31, 2024. Mon Health performed its first case of PFA on March 4, and was selected to be a teaching site for PFA by Boston Scientific.
“At the Mon Health Heart & Vascular Center, we are at the forefront of medical advances in heart care and are always looking to provide the most up-to-date procedures to produce the best outcomes for our patients,” said Dr. Sbaity. “We not only seek to provide the highest quality heart treatments available, but the most compassionate, patient-centered care to everyone who entrusts us with their heart health.”
