Mon Health Medical Center Celebrates Dr. C. Andrew Heiskell’s Distinguished Career and Retirement

Dr. Heiskell is a third-generation surgeon with whose family has left a legacy of care locally spanning over 100 years. In 1975, Dr. Heiskell began practicing as a physician at Mon Health Medical Center, formerly Monongalia General Hospital. In 1987, he started his own private practice specializing in general and vascular surgery called Heiskell King Burns & Tallman Surgical Associates, Inc. In 2014, this practice joined Mon Health System and Dr. Heiskell was appointed Medical Director of Surgical Services. In addition to this, Dr. Heiskell’s private practice operated a mobile imaging unit that provided ultrasound exams for patients outside of the Morgantown area. This unit, now a part of Mon Health Surgical Care, recently celebrated 25 years of accreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission of Vascular Laboratories.
Alongside Dr. Heiskell, Carla Dunaway, NP, has been an integral part of Heiskell King Burns & Tallman Surgical Associates, Inc. and Mon Health Surgical Care for over 23 years. She began her career alongside Heiskell as a clinical director and then worked as a Registered Nurse, assisting in surgical procedures. She later went on to obtain her Nurse Practitioner degree and continued to work with Dr. Heiskell as his primary Nurse Practitioner at Mon Health Medical Center.
“It was a privilege working alongside Dr. Heiskell. His clinical leadership is second to none and we are so thankful for his many years of service and clinical expertise alongside Carla. Through their collaborative efforts, our patients have always received compassionate, expert care,” said Dr. Mary Edwards, Chief Medical Officer of Mon Health System. “We wish him and Carla well as they step into their well-deserved retirements, celebrating the remarkable careers and legacy of care they leave behind.”
Staff honored Dr. Heiskell and Carla and their legacy of care by sharing words of encouragement and fond memories during a celebration for their retirements.
“From the day I arrived at Mon Health System and Mon Health Medical Center, Dr. Heiskell was one of the first physicians I met. His focus on the patient, quality, access, and community stands out and something so evident in Andy’s DNA,” said David Goldberg, President and CEO of Mon Health System and Davis Health System - Vandalia Health North, and Executive Vice President of Vandalia Health. “We appreciate his years of service and the legacy the Heiskell family has had on healthcare in Monongalia County and the state. I will miss our dear friend in our clinic, hospital, and especially the operating room, but I am so happy for him to enjoy retirement, family, and his personal pursuits. Thank you for all you have done to care for our friends and neighbors, sir. You have left an indelible mark on our hospital, healthcare, and community. Carla has been such a vital part of our surgery program and can’t imagine her not being here. We wish Carla happy and healthy wishes as she retires and appreciate her legacy of kindness, professionalism and grace.”
