Mon Health Medical Center will soon expand the types of medical imaging it provides patients with the recently installed Siemens MAGNETOM Aera 1.5T MRI.

"With the new wide bore, 1.5T MRI, we'll be able to offer cardiac, breast, prostate, abdominal, magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and peripheral runoff (blood) vessels imaging," said Brenda DeBastiani, director of imaging services at Mon Health Medical Center. "We're also happy about being able to offer MRI exams to our patients with specific heart stents, which we couldn't do before."

Like all MRIs, the MAGNETOM Aera uses magnets that are measured in Tesla (T) to acquire non-invasive images of soft tissue, bone and muscles.

"At 1.5T, the MAGNETOM Aera offers superb image quality that may be used for a wide range of medical needs to help physicians make more accurate diagnoses," said DeBastiani.

The wide bore refers to the donut-shaped tube-like structure of an MRI machine, in which the patient lies during the imaging process. The aide opening is not as tight as some MRI machines, reducing claustrophobia concerns.

MRI techs began simulation training for the new MRI on June 12. The first patients will be scheduled the week of July 9.
