Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital Welcomes New Oncology Services
Posted Date: 10/21/2021
Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital is pleased to expand their specialties offered with the addition of oncologist,
Ihtishaam Qazi, MD, to its staff. Dr. Qazi will be treating a variety of cancers and will be focusing on lung, breast, and gastrointestinal conditions. He will now be treating lymphomas, leukemia, and myelomas at the Kingwood hospital.
"Expanding clinical services and bringing care closer to home to patients is our driving mission. Dr. Qazi seeing patients in our Physician Center means our cancer patients who are spending many hours a week traveling to appointments and treatments can now see their doctor closer to home," said Melissa Lockwood, Chief Administrative Officer at Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital. "Being able to offer comprehensive cancer care right here in Preston County will mean everything to cancer patients in terms of convenience and improving their journey to better health. We can provide a familiar and comfortable atmosphere and less travel time which means more time for healing."
When asked about his interest in medicine, Dr. Qazi noted that his family had many friends who were physicians, and so choosing to go into the medical field was an easy choice. During his undergraduate work at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Dr. Qazi became interested in cancer research, thus his specialization today, but he sees the field as a place to give patients hope.
“In the last decade, we have seen real change and progress in cancer treatment. I chose to come to Mon Health because the system is part of that progress. We are really targeting more therapies for particular cancers and seeing success," Dr. Qazi said. "In my perspective, I think that patients in West Virginia are much more appreciative of the care that a doctor gives them. We are really respected here and that promotes a good relationship between me and the patient. I am happy to be here."
Dr. Qazi attended Nitro High School and received his undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve. His medical degree and residency are from West Virginia University as well as his fellowship in hematology and oncology. He and his wife, Siru, have three children. In his spare time, Dr. Qazi coaches’ recreational soccer.
