Mon Health Providers Weigh in for Mental Health Awareness Month
Posted Date: 5/28/2024
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and Mon Health System providers are weighing in with their recommendations and words of encouragement.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1 in 5 U.S. adults live with a mental illness and more than 1 in 5 youth aged 13 to 18-years-old either currently have or at some point during their life have had a seriously debilitating mental illness. Additionally, about 1 in 25 U.S. adults lives with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression.
“Unfortunately, due to stigma, people are often reluctant to seek out mental health services. Some people feel that they can get better on their own. However, conditions like depression and anxiety are more common than people realize,” said Dr. Richard Mullin, Psychiatrist and Behavioral Medicine Specialist at Mon Health. “There are several good treatment options available from therapy or medication to a combination of both therapy and medication. Getting treatment for mental health issues improves people’s overall quality of life as conditions such as depression and anxiety can negatively affect a person’s sleep, appetite, job or school performance, and relationships. I frequently hear patients say that they wished they had sought out treatment sooner as they realize they suffered longer than they needed to. The sooner you talk to your doctor, the sooner you can begin the path to feeling better.”
While it can be difficult to seek help with mental health struggles initially, taking that first step is vital to receiving the care that you need. At Mon Health, patients are encouraged to speak with their providers about how they’re feeling both physically and mentally.
“This journey we call life can be hard, dark, and tortuous. You don’t have to do it alone. Everyone struggles with feelings and thoughts at some time. Seek help with yours. Life can be amazing when our dark thoughts brighten,” said Dr. Melissa Albert, Psychiatrist at Mon Health.
Mon Health has resources for those seeking answers and treatment for their mental health struggles. Mon Health Psychiatry providers treat a range of patients and disorders including those with anxiety disorders, ADHD, behavioral problems, mood disorders, trauma-related problems, and more.
“When you take care of your mental health, your physical and emotional health improves; you become more resilient, and it makes it easier to find ways to manage life stressors in a healthy and positive way. Mental Health Awareness Month assists in normalizing a universally experienced condition, bringing recognition to available services, and highlighting the importance of community and togetherness,” said Jessica Garlow, Licensed Clinical Therapist at Mon Health. “Mon Health provides collaborative patient care, increasing Psychiatry and Outpatient Therapy Services as part of individual treatment and wellbeing.
