Mon Health Recognizes Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month
Posted Date: 9/3/2024

September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month and Mon Health is taking the time to highlight the importance of regular screenings, vaccination, and education to reduce risk of disease.
According to the Foundation for Women’s Cancer, every five minutes, a woman is diagnosed with one of the five gynecologic cancers including cervical, ovarian, uterine/endometrial, vaginal, and vulvar. While there are many factors that can increase a person’s risk of gynecologic cancers such as age, family history, and preexisting medical conditions, women can reduce their risk of gynecologic cancers through preventative care and education.
Regular screening tests, such as the Pap test for cervical cancer, can detect precancerous cells and allow for swift treatment to prevent cancer. Receiving the HPV vaccine can protect against the types of HPV that cause cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. In fact, the American Cancer Society recommends the HPV vaccine for anyone aged 11-26-years-old who hasn’t been vaccinated, and some adults aged 27-45-years-old who haven’t been vaccinated.
Speaking with your primary care provider or gynecologist at annual exams about your risk factors and available preventative care, such as screenings and vaccination, can minimize your risk of gynecologic cancers and help you stay on-top of your health.
When gynecologic cancer is detected, it is often treatable through surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, or chemotherapy. Mon Health’s comprehensive team of providers includes gynecologic surgeons that specialize in the highest level of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery for women with both benign and oncologic conditions. In 2024, Mon Health Medical Center was reaccredited by the Surgical Review Corporation as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology. Additionally, Dr. Susan Capelle, Dr. Craig Herring, Dr. William McBee, Dr. Shane Prettyman, Dr. John Sunyecz, and Dr. Christine Wilson have been recognized once again as Surgeons of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology.
Mon Health Cancer Center has also been accredited by the Commission on Cancer, a quality program of the American College of Surgeons. This accreditation ensures comprehensive cancer care including a complete range of state-of-the-art services and equipment, a multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best available treatment options, access to prevention and early detection programs, a cancer registry that offers lifelong patient follow-up, and more.
“At Mon Health, we offer compassionate, high-quality care from a comprehensive team of providers to treat gynecologic cancers in women across the region,” said Dr. William McBee, Gynecologic Oncologist at Mon Health Cancer Center. “During Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, we not only want our patients to understand the importance of detection and prevention, but we want them to rest assured that should they need gynecologic oncology care, at Mon Health, they are in the best hands.”
