Mon Health Runs High-Tech Drills for Emergency Preparedness

The Mobile Simulation Lab is a bus fully equipped with state-of-the-art, high-fidelity simulation manikins including adult, obstetrics, and pediatric manikins, a central control room, a sophisticated video recording and viewing technology, and other equipment and supplies needed for effective skill training. For the recent training of Vandalia Health’s Mon Health System staff for high-risk scenarios, all simulation equipment has been moved off the bus and into hospital rooms. This allows staff members to train where they work for more specialized drills.
At Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, staff performed two multidisciplinary drills, bringing together nurses, physicians, CRNAs, respiratory therapists, and ancillary staff. At Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital (Inpatient and Surgical Services), staff performed high-risk drills for adult patient scenarios. Additionally, Nurses and Physicians performed emergency department drills.
“Several of these drills were performed in the early hours of the morning and came as a surprise to staff. This made for the most authentic test of our staff’s preparedness and allowed us to make life-saving improvements to our care and better equip our staff to handle emergent situations,” said Jamie McLaughlin, Senior Director of Critical Care for Mon Health System. “I am proud to be a part of a health system that prioritizes the continued education of all staff to ensure that we provide the best possible care for each of our patients.
