Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital Offers Free Vein Screenings

Posted Date: 10/10/2024
Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital will host a free vein screening on Monday, October 28, from 2-4PM at the Mon Health Vein Care Center, located on the hospital's first floor.

This screening, conducted by Ferdinand C. Martinez, MD, will help patients assess the health of their veins and determine if further care is needed. During the screening, participants will view a short video and hear a presentation by Dr. Martinez before receiving an individual ultrasound. The ultrasound results will indicate if the patient should return for a more in-depth evaluation.

Varicose veins, a common condition affecting over 30 million Americans, will be a screening focus. Despite its prevalence, fewer than 2 million people seek treatment. Varicose veins occur when venous valves malfunction, causing blood to flow backward and veins to enlarge. This condition, also known as venous reflux, can lead to symptoms such as aching leg pain, rashes, burning or itching skin, tiredness, heaviness, and swelling in the legs. In more advanced cases, patients may experience skin darkening, swelling, and even ulceration.

“Many people live with uncomfortable symptoms of venous disease without realizing there's an underlying issue that can be treated," said Dr. Ferdinand C. Martinez. "This screening is an opportunity to assess your vein health and take the first step toward relief.”

The goal of this screening is to help patients identify potential venous issues early and improve their quality of life by addressing symptoms before they worsen.

Availability for the screening is limited. To reserve a spot, call (304) 517-1272. For more information about Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, visit MonHealth.com/SJMH.
