Mon Health Surgeon Introduces Advanced Aquablation Therapy with HYDROS Technology for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia

Posted Date: 12/11/2024

Vandalia Health’s Mon Health Medical Center proudly announces a medical milestone with the successful completion of its first Aquablation® therapy procedure using advanced HYDROS™ technology.

This innovative treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, was performed by Dr. Jaschar Shakuri-Rad, Urologist, Medical Director of Robotic Surgery, Medical Director of Medical Specialties, and Master Robotic Surgeon, making Mon Health the first health care provider in West Virginia and the surrounding region and among the first in the country to bring this minimally invasive option to patients.

Aquablation therapy with HYDROS technology combines the precision of robotic-assisted surgery with the safety and effectiveness of high-velocity water jet ablation guided by real-time ultrasound imaging. HYDROS technology allows for accuracy in removing prostate tissue causing urinary obstruction, while reducing the risk of complications, including sexual dysfunction and incontinence, often associated with traditional surgical methods.

"We are excited to offer Aquablation therapy with HYDROS technology," said Dr. Shakuri-Rad.  "This innovative approach allows us to deliver highly individualized treatment that improves outcomes while minimizing disruption to patients' lives. It’s truly a game-changer for managing BPH."

BPH is a common condition affecting millions of men as they age, often leading to troubling symptoms like frequent urination, difficulty emptying the bladder, and interrupted sleep. Aquablation therapy with HYDROS technology offers a minimally invasive option for men who do not respond to medications or seek an alternative to traditional surgery.

The procedure typically lasts less than an hour and is performed under general or spinal anesthesia in a hospital setting. Leveraging HYDROS technology, the treatment ensures optimal tissue removal while protecting critical anatomical structures, offering patients faster recovery and improved quality of life.

"We are proud to be at the forefront of medical innovation by introducing HYDROS technology for Aquablation therapy," said David Goldberg, President and CEO of Mon Health System and Davis Health System - Vandalia Health Northern Region, and Executive Vice President of Vandalia Health. "This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to investing in the latest technologies to improve patient care and provide advanced treatment options to our community."
