Mon Health System Recognizes Colon Cancer Awareness Month
Posted Date: 3/25/2024
March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and Mon Health providers bring timely recommendations to prevent, detect, and treat colon cancer.
Also known as colorectal cancer, colon cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide and is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States, according to the World Health Organization and the American Cancer Society.
Colon cancer predominately affects older individuals with the majority of cases occurring in people aged 50 and above. While risk for this disease increases with age, changes to lifestyle and regular screening, starting at age 45, can help prevent colon cancer.
Colonoscopies can detect both polyps, which can be removed during the colonoscopy procedure, and colon cancer at early stages, which allows for early treatment. Regular screenings, as recommended by a primary provider, are vitally important for the detection and treatment of colon cancer.
The Mon Health Cancer Center is accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons. For patients and the community, the CoC accreditation ensures comprehensive cancer care including a complete range of state-of-the-art services and equipment, a multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best available treatment options, access to prevention and early detection programs, a cancer registry that offers lifelong patient follow-up, and more.
“Patients need to engage with their primary care providers to see what type of screening is best for them and when they ought to be screened,” said Dr. Ihtishaam Qazi, Medical Director of Oncology for Mon Health System. “At Mon Health, providers work together to deliver comprehensive care to each of our patients, ensuring they get the quality care that they need.”
