Vandalia Health’s Mon Health Heart & Vascular Center Hosts Otsuka Medical Devices from Japan
Posted Date: 9/12/2024
Mon Health Heart & Vascular Center at Mon Health Medical Center is one of three hospitals in the nation to be visited by an international team from Otsuka Medical Devices and Recor Medical to discuss its success with the renal denervation (RDN) procedure for treating high blood pressure. Representatives from Otsuka Medical Devices in Japan, the parent company of Recor Medical, visited Cleveland Clinic and Henry Ford Hospital before visiting Mon Health Medical Center in Morgantown on Thursday, Sept. 12.
On December 29, 2023, Dr. Wissam Gharib performed West Virginia’s first RDN procedure for high blood pressure with the new Paradise® Ultrasound Renal Denervation (uRDN) system, making Mon Health Medical Center among the first 10 medical facilities in the United States to offer this procedure. Currently, Vandalia Health’s Mon Health Medical Center and CAMC are the only hospitals in West Virginia and the greater Pittsburgh area to offer the uRDN procedure.
The Paradise uRDN procedure uses ultrasound energy to ablate the renal nerves and lower blood pressure. The procedure is minimally invasive and may be performed in an outpatient setting, allowing most patients to return home the same day.
Mon Health Medical Center is the only community hospital in the uRDN program and is the facility that has seen the most success with the procedure since its inception. Due to the success of this program, representatives from Otsuka Medical Devices and Recor Medical sought out discussions with leaders from Mon Health Heart & Vascular about the program to gain insights on how to expand the program and offer the Paradise uRDN procedure to more patients at more hospitals around the world.
“This visit from leadership of Otsuka Medical Devices and Recor Medical again demonstrates the leadership and expertise found at Mon Health Medical Center’s Heart & Vascular Center. This team has been recognized as the first in West Virginia and 24th in the nation to be designated as HeartCARE Center National Distinction of Excellence and the first in the state to be awarded Electrophysiology Accreditation by the American College of Cardiology, has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report to its 2024-2025 Best Hospitals as a High Performing Hospital in COPD and Heart Failure, and is a leader in advanced care procedures in structural heart and cardiac imaging,” said David Goldberg, President and CEO of Mon Health System and Davis Health System - Vandalia Health North, and Executive Vice President of Vandalia Health.
“We are pleased to offer Recor’s renal denervation procedure to patients in West Virgina and beyond. In fact, ours is the only facility in close proximity to Pittsburgh to offer this therapy. Our community holds Vandalia Health and Mon Health in high esteem as both patient-centered and clinically superior. I am so thankful for this expert team led by our clinicians and Dr. Wissam Gharib who personally brought this treatment to West Virginia to drive advanced care and the best outcomes right here, close to home.”
“Otsuka Medical Devices and Recor are proud to work with the world-class team at Mon Health to bring the Paradise uRDN system to their community. Their approach to healthcare is closely aligned to our patients-first philosophy at Recor, which makes our relationship all the more meaningful,” said Lara Barghout, President and CEO of Recor Medical. “Together, we will make a positive impact to the health of patients in West Virginia who are struggling to control their blood pressure.”
