Mon Health Bariatrics Performs First Robotic Procedure at Mon Health Medical Center

Posted Date: 7/31/2024
Mon Health’s Dr. Mustapha Daouadi, Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery, completed Mon Health Medical Center’s first robotics bariatric procedure since launching this new service offering in February.

Bariatrics, or weight loss surgery, has been proven to be a safe and effective tool for durable and maintained weight loss. The aim of bariatric surgery is to lose weight and become healthier by curing or improving the significant medical problems that are associated with excessive weight.

Patients who are interested in undergoing bariatric surgery through Mon Health Bariatrics must complete psychological, nutritional, and exercise assessments. Blood work and further testing may be required. These comprehensive assessments ensure that the patient is best fit for the procedure, recovery, and lifestyle changes both before and after the operation.

In June 2024, Dr. Daouadi performed a robotic-assisted revisional bariatric surgery at Mon Health Medical Center. After a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy at an outside institution in 2019, the patient unfortunately developed a hiatal hernia and severe reflux. This procedure at Mon Health Medical Center repaired the patient’s hiatal hernia and converted the patient’s original sleeve gastrectomy to a Roux En-Y gastric bypass.

“The patient did exceptionally well,” said Dr. Daouadi. “The precision and minimally invasive nature of the robotic-assisted surgery allowed our patient to experience and report minimal pain and begin their bariatric diet immediately after surgery.”

The patient was discharged home one day after surgery and was able to return to work after two weeks. In addition, the patient had a complete resolution of their reflux symptoms.

“The success of this procedure and the positive outcome for our patient demonstrates this procedure’s effectiveness and the high-quality care that our team provides,” said Dr. Daouadi. “At Mon Health, we are committed to using advanced technology to improve patient outcomes. I look forward to continuing to provide innovative and compassionate care to the communities we serve.”
