Mon General Hospital Honored by Healthcare Publication

            Mon General Hospital is the only West Virginia hospital to be recognized as one of “100 hospitals with great women’s health programs” by Becker’s Hospital Review.

            Becker’s Hospital Review published the list in its December 2014 issue. Mon General joins many other prestigious hospitals on the list, including John Hopkins, Cleveland Clinic and the Mayo Clinic.

            “We have always placed a strong emphasis on women’s health at Mon General Hospital and it is very rewarding to see our women’s initiatives recognized,” said Mon Health System President and CEO Darryl Duncan. “Mon General is committed to offering the very latest technology in women’s healthcare. This can be seen in our newly remodeled and expanded Hazel Ruby McQuain Birth Center, our Women’s Imaging Center and in our gynecologic oncology treatment and surgery programs at the Zelda Stein Weiss Cancer Center.”

            The Becker’s article highlighted Mon General’s Hazel Ruby McQuain Birth Center, which features 16 birthing suites and a dedicated C-section operating room. The center is designed under the labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum concept, in which a women having a routine delivery remains in the same room throughout her stay along with her newborn. Each birthing suite has a bedroom like atmosphere and a place for the father or a family member to stay.  The birth center was remodeled and expanded in 2013 to meet the area’s growing demand for birthing services.

            Mon General’s Women’s Imaging Center recently added the Fischer-Giotto digital breast imaging system for both mammograms and breast biopsies. This system produces the highest-possible digital mammography images, making it much easier to detect abnormalities. The center also added elastography, a new ultrasound technology that can better classify breast lesions.

            Becker’s also referenced the hospital’s online health library, noting that it “includes extensive informational and testimonial resources on pregnancy, menopause, sexual health, breast cancer and preventive care among other topics.”  The library can be accessed through the hospital’s website, Mon Health Medical Center.

            Hospitals were selected for the Becker’s Hospital Review list based on clinical accolades and recognition for women’s health excellence from various healthcare groups and agencies. Hospitals on the list offer outstanding health services geared toward women, such as gynecology, obstetrics, women-focused heart care and women-focused cancer care, among other women’s health needs, according to the magazine.
